The Medal of Honor, Air Force Cross,
and Silver Star are all awarded for heroism while engaged in armed
conflict.
The Distinguished Flying Cross is awarded for combat (heroism or
extraordinary achievement) or non-combat extraordinary achievement.
The Airman's Medal may be
awarded for heroism that involves the recipients voluntary risk of his life
but not associated with combat operations.
The Bronze Star recognizes single acts of heroism performed in ground
combat.
The Purple Heart is awarded for being wounded or killed in any action
against an enemy of the U.S.
The Air Medal is awarded for single acts of heroism or meritorious
achievement while participating in aerial flight
The Commendation Medal is awarded for
distinctive meritorious achievement or courage that do not involve voluntary
risk of life.
The Combat Action Medal is awarded to
recognize any military member who actively participated in either air or
ground combat.
